Keep hearing about videos going viral, making an everyday individual a star overnight? Read my experiment to make money from You Tube videos.
I’ve often heard about teens, parents, everyday people who make money from You Tube videos. If you upload videos to YouTube and they become popular, YouTube may decide to start showing other peoples ads on your videos. This means that you can earn a share of ad revenue simply by adding your own content to YouTube. I’ve heard of some videos going viral and generating over £100,000 for one video! Remember “Charlie bit my finger”? My 4 year old son is currently obsessed with watching videos of toys on YouTube! Not cartoons or his favourite programs, literally videos of people (adults or children) playing with toys – sometimes opening up the packets and showing you what the toy does. He also likes watching lego sets being built. I’m always taking little video clips of some of his games – especially some slow motion ones of a high speed car racing game he has. I thought I’d use some of these to see how easy it is to set up a YouTube account, upload a video and see what happens.
Here’s a quick run down of the actions I have taken so far to try this out:
- Found some video clips to use – they were all quite short (5-10 secs or so)
- Opened iMovie on the Mac to try and merge the clips into a single, longer video
- Created a new Google account to separate this from my more-professional (!) Google persona
- Signed into YouTube and clicked “Upload video”
- It gave me an option to create a Brand channel so I didn’t have to use my account name – I chose this option and came up with SJ_Toys
